Tara

The Practice of 21-Tara

"The Essence of Two-fold Accumulation"

-Vajrayana Puja and Meditation

Tara is the female Buddha of compassion, representing fearlessness, swiftness in saving beings and protection from suffering. At the ultimate level, Tara is the compassionate energy of innate wisdom inseparable from the vast expanse of emptiness. It is continuously arising, transforming, radiating and fulfilling the purpose and dissolving back to the original state. This is a state of awareness completely free from ego-clinging.

At the relative level Green Tara (sanskrit: shyama tara, tibetan: drol jang or drolma) is seen as youthful, playful and dynamic. Yet, she is also called "mother" because every being is so dear to her as how a single child is to its mother. Even while she sits in equipoise, her energy is dynamic - with her right leg outstretched showing her readiness to spring into action whenever needed. In relative world, the compassionate wisdom-energy of Tara manifests in innumerable ways to benefit beings. Her twenty-one manifestations represent different aspects of overcoming the fear and suffering of sentient beings. There are aspects within these twenty one corresponding to increasing wisdom and intelligence, dispelling of sickness, attainment of longevity, removal of obstacles, clearing of nightmares, pacification of demonic forces and destructive emotions, increasing of harmony and prosperity, overcoming of disputes, etc. In this way, Tara practice is beneficial for all-round wellness - both temporal and spiritual.

"The Essence of Two-fold Accumulation" is a sadhana of twenty-one manifestations of Tara. This puja and meditation is as in the liturgy from the mind-treasure revealed in the treasure cycle of terton Chokyur Lingpa in the 19th Century. This is a special cycle of Tara practice from the terma tradition. It is profound in wisdom and vast in accumulation of merits. It combines the inner tantric view of understanding the primordially pure nature of oneself and the environment, with the outer tantric method of accumulating merit through paying homage and offerings to the manifestations of Tara.

Suitability: To engage in this practice with full understanding, an empowerment of Tara along with oral transmission and teaching of the liturgy is required. However, those who do not have these can also join for this session and experience the blessing of Tara.
